‘AKIRA’ is a sci-fi story that first appeared the 1980s in manga form, before being adapted to anime and exploding in popularity in both Japan and overseas. 30 years have passed since those humble beginnings, and the original creator Katsuhiro Otomo’s view of the world is being paid tribute to with drawings by approximately 80 artists who are at the top of their field throughout the world that have been put together in this collection that is now on sale.
Renowned French comic artist Benoît Peeters takes the reins for the preface. Top Japanese anime artists and illustrators such as world renowned ‘Ghost in the Shell’s Masamune Shirow and ‘NARUTO’s Masashi Kishimoto, Naoki Urasawa known for ’20 Century Boys’, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto known for Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Shou Tajima known for MPD Psycho make their contribution to this tribute work with hand drawn images by them that you won’t see anywhere else! This is obviously a must have for ‘AKIRA’ fans, but also an unmissable item for fans of each of the respective artists that have taken part in this truly impressive and valuable tribute drawing collection.
The release date for this collection coincides with the Angoulême International Comics Festival on January 26, with both the Japanese version and the French version going on sale on this date.
Now that it is 2017, there are only two years left until we reach 2019, the year that ‘AKIRA’ was set in when it was originally written long ago. This is the perfect chance for those who haven’t heard of ‘AKIRA’ to get to know it!
